| February 6, 2012 - As we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Fay A. Rotenberg School, a staff member reflects on the special moments that make the otherwise unglamorous job worthwhile. This particular moment involves a young woman, a former client, who has recently returned to work with current clients at the Fay A. Rotenberg School. In 2009, Nicole wrote a poem as a thank you for helping her through a particularly difficult time: To: Tim – Someone who hasn’t given up on me, even though I have! “Dreams Deferred” April, 27 2009
What Happens to a Dream Deferred?
Does it try to run back like a lost child to it’s mothers arms, alive?
Or does it find a new home, a person with drive?
Maybe it burns out; the butt of a Newport,
A jump shot like Ray Allen’s that cam up too short!
Maybe it becomes a star, staying out of reach.
Or does it disappear into books, something our teacher will teach?
Maybe we dream dreams that are never meant to be,
or we just make them up and allow them to be swallowed by the streets?
We give up on our dreams, we can’t take the heat.
Until we are being chased by the police; when will we ever stop to think?
“What happens to a dream deferred?” We won’t know until a hand is reached out to help us forward! Thank You Tim. From: Nicole, who sees a ray of light (it’s little, but it’s there). Nicole visited the School a few weeks ago in conjunction with a visit from the National Crittenton Foundation. After the visit, Tim said “I see what a wonderful young woman Nicole has become. I could not be more proud of her accomplishments since she wrote this poem.
