| On August 9th, twelve NYPUM riders and eight staff from Lancaster Campus traveled to Canaan, NY and met ten NYPUM programs from MA, CT, NY and PA to compete in the 35th Annual NYPUM Rodeo. According to National NYPUM Director, Ken Hutchinson, about 90 kids and 40 staff attended the event. For most of the Lancaster team, it was their first time visiting another state. The Rodeo is all about camping, games, campfires, good food, meeting new people from around the Northeast and of course riding mini-bikes. Amie McCarthy, Program Manager of the Adolescent Treatment Unit in Lancaster, attended the Rodeo and she had this to say about the experience: “It was wonderful to see kids really excelling at a very difficult task. I knew that NYPUM was a motivating and innovative program, but I had no idea of the widespread effects it had on the kids. Looking over the field, I saw kids competing for their individual programs, but they all maintained positive and motivating attitudes cheering on not only their teammates, but children from other programs as well. The boys from ATU, as well as other Lancaster clients, not only got to ride and compete, but they enjoyed the company of each other and really seemed to benefit from having a regular teenager experience while camping. There were no “time outs” or “restrictions”, just simple redirections when warranted. This is one event that I look forward to participating in again in the future and hopefully participating in NYPUM on campus as well.” Rich Hylan, Director of the Adventure Education Department, also went to the Rodeo. “The Rodeo is one of those great events where the dedication of committed staff and the hard work and determination of youth in the program come together,” said Hylan. No camping trip is complete without rain and they got lots of it as we started to set up their tents. While they struggled with setting up wet tents and slippery poles, the kids from Burlington, MA NYPUM charged through the downpour shouting, “We’ll help!” It was like the sun came out before the rain ever stopped and that was how the whole three days went.

"Justice, dignity, equality – these are words which are often used loosely, with little appreciation of their meaning. I think that their meaning can be distilled into one goal: that every child in this country live as we would want our own children to live."
