this is adam's story
(For confidentiality, Adam’s name has been changed.)
Nine-year-old Adam was referred to RFK Children’s Action Corps’ Wellington Hall at our Lancaster Campus through the Department of Children and Families (DCF). He was taken out of his home through a Care and Protection Order, along with his other siblings. They had experienced consistent trauma within the home, such as witnessing domestic violence and chronic parental substance abuse, and enduring repeated physical abuse by their mother’s partner and severe neglect by their mother. Adam began to display unsafe behavior as a mental defense to the trauma he experienced. He would have fits of physical aggression and inflict self-injury.
When Adam came to Wellington Hall, he struggled with managing and controlling his emotions. He also had difficulty creating and maintaining functional, healthy relationships with others. Staff helped Adam overcome the trauma he experienced, enhance his future safety and healthy development, and enabled him to once again find trust within his relationships.
Adam has since moved on to a supportive and safe foster home, with foster parents who are committed to his care. His tremendous growth and development were made possible by the care and endurance of our Wellington Hall team.
Adam’s story is one of many that take place every day at our programs throughout the state. We have seen remarkable transformations others deemed impossible. Our staff help create new beginnings for the boys and girls in our care so that one day they can make a positive mark on the world.

Your Support Is Critical:
- We need to shape new initiatives, expand effective programs, provide intensive education and develop innovative responses to challenges confronting our youth.
- Our schools are considerably under-resourced, both with educational tools and teachers. Your gift, of any amount, will make a huge impact on the life of a child.
- Your gift is an investment in the future; it directly impacts the children in our care and helps ensure children who need a second chance are given that opportunity.
